Filmmaker, screenwriter, graphic designer, and artist born in the United States in 1966. He has directed commercials for Adidas, Nike, and Gap, as well as music videos for Air, Blonde Redhead, and Pulp. He also designed record covers for Sonic Youth and Beastie Boys and was active in the 1990s New York cultural scene as a graphic artist and designer. He also designed T-shirts for Beastie Boys' charity collaboration "A BATHING APE(R) x BEASTIE BOYS Charity T-shirt" as part of their support for the 3.11 Tohoku earthquake relief efforts in Japan.
As a film director, following his first feature film "Thumbsucker" (2005), his second film "Life is for Beginners" (2010) won Christopher Plummer the "84th Academy Award" for Best Supporting Actor. His film "20 Century Women" (2016) was nominated for an "Academy Award'' for Best Screenplay. He also wrote and directed the 2022-released film "c'mon c'mon" (produced by A24), starring "Joaquin Phoenix," who won an Oscar for Best Actor for his role in the film "The Joker".
